Doktorsvörn í eðlisfræði: Þyngdarfræðileg heilmyndun í þéttefnisfræði

Tími:
Föstudaginn, 2. september 2011 - 14:00
Staðsetning:
Í stofu 132 í Öskju

Föstudaginn 2. september fer fram doktorsvörn við Raunvísindadeild Háskóla
Íslands. Þá ver Tobias Zingg doktorsritgerð sína: Holographic Models for

On Friday, September 2nd, Tobias Zingg will defend his PhD thesis
"Holographic Models for Condensed Matter" at the Faculty of Physical
Sciences at the University of Iceland.

The opponents will be Amanda Peet, Associate Professor at the University
of Toronto in Kanada, and Koenraad Schalm, Associate Professor at the
University of Leiden, in the Netherlands.

Tobias is supervised by Lárus Thorlacius, Professor of Physics. Other
members of the PhD advisory committee are Ragnar Sigurðsson, Professor of
Mathematics, and Þórður Jónsson, Professor of Physics.

Professor Guðmundur G. Haraldsson, Head of the Faculty of Physical
Sciences, will conduct the ceremony, which will take place in Room 132 of
Askja beginning at 14:00.

Tobias Zingg was born and raised in Basel, Switzerland. He obtained a
master's degree in theoretical physics from the University of Basel in
August 2006 and a master's degree in mathematics in March 2007. He began
his Ph.D. studies at the University of Iceland in Fall 2007. The project
was supported by the University of Iceland Research Fund, the Eimskip
Research Fund, the Icelandic Research Fund, and by a grant from the
European Commission. The research was carried out at the mathematics
division of the Science Institute at the University of Iceland and at
Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, in Stockholm,
Sweden.

The project deals with a recently proposed description of condensed matter
systems via holographic methods developed in string theory. The emphasis
is on the application of this formalism to describe strongly correlated
electron systems and quantum critical phenomena observed in various metal
alloys over the last decades.
